XDs Pocket 45

Springfield Armory, in company with the same renowned HS Produkt factory in Europe, had come out with a pocket-carry .45ACP. Dubbed the XD-S, it uses the same action as the proven XD line of short recoil operated semi-automatic pistols in a much smaller profile. When compared to such .45ACP subcompacts on the market as the Glock 36, the XD-S is a lighter, shorter, and most importantly slimmer firearm.

    The design of the XD-S

The XD-S is an all-new platform ergonomically designed to place the firearm in the hand for instinctive point shooting. A Picatinny rail allows for the mounting of lights and lasers if desired or the weapon can be left as sleek and slim as when it departed the factory. Snag-free, low-profile rear and bright fiber-optic front sights provide an improvement over most manufacturers' plain white sights. Safeties include a loaded-chamber indicator that can be physically felt in the dark or low light situations, as well as trigger and grip safeties. Scalloped slide serrations that provide fast access to the pistol without snagging fabrics, a short-reset trigger that allows faster follow up shots, and interchangeable back straps to customize your grip show that the XD-S is a step ahead in the combat pocket gun category.

    Compared

In terms of comparison, its closest rival is Glock's series of subcompact 9mm/.40S&W guns, the Glock G26/27 respectively. The Glock 27 is about 6.29 inches long and weighs about 27 ounces when loaded. It features a standard 9 round capacity magazine of much lower power 9mm rounds than the Springfield XD which is a dead ringer for the Glock 27 specifications otherwise. When you compare Glock's subcompact .45ACP, the G36, the Austrian polymer is pushing 7-inches long (6.97-inches), 1.13-inches wide, and weighing in at 27-ounces with a six round magazine. The Springfield XD-S just out and out beats these specs at every turn.

They seem to be running at about $500 new in the box that in some markets is about the same as a Glock 36, which makes the choice even harder...unless you are an XD owner already.
