At our home, we will not answer the door unless we know in advance who is there. This is especially true after dark. Unfortunately, the kids selling candy for their school bands or little league baseball teams catch the brunt of this policy, but it has become too dangerous to answer the door if you don't know who is there. A man died in our city recently, and his wife was seriously injured, when two home invaders came in shooting. It's not worth it. If anybody wants to visit us, they need to call first.

In my mind, not answering the door at all is better than answering it armed.
