Lots of guys, myself included, have cleaned a brand new firearm before taking it to the range. Honestly, if you've dry fired it a few times, and inspected it well, (which shouldn't yield any issues then go for it. As they say, "shoot it like you stole it...":metal2:

I've read in several posts on several forums that the goop put on your gun at the factory is more a rust preventive than a lubricant. Before shooting for the first time I field strip my new guns, clean out all the factory gunk with a cleaner followed by alcohol, then apply whatever the lube du jour is that I'm using at the time.
