I believe that a pellet rifle ( springer compressed air ) has enough terminal velocity to kill...BB's can be deadly too, but they are usually spherical in shape and traveling at a much lower velocity...so shot placement is more critical.

I've taken plenty of small game with my .177 ( 4.5mm ) pellet rifle...and now the calibers are getting bigger and more powerful... .20 / .22 / .25 / .357 and the list goes on.
