I have the XD40 SC and the XD40 5", both purchased new, and didn't receive anything like that. I know for a fact, what ever it is, it is not needed for the complete disassembly/assembly because I disassemble/assambled my XD's using a small drift, and a small brass tack hammer.

I tried to find something but couldn't find anything pertinent.
Thought it might possibly be an empty chamber flag but don't think so at all.
Save it in your gun case.

I believe that came out of the SAXD holster that came with you magazine holder and speed loader, it is a spacer that keeps it spread out

That's a left handed framus. It's for tightening the gitterstil on the XD series pistols.
