The GSS isn’t actually counting the number of firearms in each household. Rather it is counting the number of individuals willing to disclose to a stranger at their front door how many firearms they own.

Gee, I can't imagine why. I tell every stranger who shows up on my doorstep just what I have and where I keep it. I want to make it easy for them when they come back to steal, plus I'll know just where they might be. The hunters call it "baiting"
