Any suggestions? compact light that doesn't extend too far past the front. Open carry is fine. Not looking to pay a fortune for some custom made baby seal skin ruby crusted holster--just something simple, durable, and functional.

Check out the Viridian site. And most holster makers have options for Streamlight, Viridian, Crimson Trace and many others. Just google holsters. I have a Crossbreed, Cooks and a others.

DSG Arms Alpha series is an awesome kydex holster. It's convertible from owb to iwb. I prefer this brand to Raven and there is generally no wait time.
My edc is an XD45c with a surefire x300 in an alpha series, iwb.

Man I'm sorry, I had seen the one for the 9/40 and never noticed that there was no 45. My only experience is with Blackhawk, Safariland, and DSG. Blackhawk probably won't do you any good because they are pretty limited with XDs (why I quit using them) and Safariland is more duty/competition. A lot of guys around here like Bladetech in IDPA, but they're mostly running 1911s, Glocks, and M&Ps. Xds are the exception here. Good luck

Ok, stupid question, but is there a dif in frame size between the 9/40 and the 45? I wsk since some sites say their holsters are good for all XDms. Maybe I'm just reading them wrong...

I don't know. I've used a couple of holsters (leather) that were marked 9/40 for my 45s before. Once again I'm using an XD not an XDM. Do you have a lgs that would have both, compare side by side? DSG Arms could probably answer also if you call or email them. Or most holster makers for that matter. It occurs to me, is the SA holster that comes with the gun caliber specific?

I have a crimson trace LG-746 Rail Light on my XDM-40 4.5, with a Lazermax guide rod laser, and matching IWB & OWB Crossbreed holsters that give me light, laser, and 17 RDS of .40 S&W at the ready. Its a very low profile arrangement for a full frame. For EDC I use an XDM-40 Compact, which is lighter, profiles less, uses the same mags, and can interchange the rail light, if not the laser. Both are Bi-Tone, and a handsome pair ;-)
