Howdy everyone. Just bought an xd 40 full size last week and will be picking it up later this week (ca waiting period). I currently have a box of winchester 180gr fmj, but am undecided on which round to use for self defense. In my taurus 605, i was firing the winchester winclean 125gr jsp for a very long time. When i decided to start using jhp rounds i tried the hornady critical defense. Instantly i hated the round, mostly due to how dirty my gun was after only a few rounds. Needless to say i wont run them in the xd. I want to run a 165gr jhp for self defense and was wondering what you guys are using. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the novel.

Federal HST is my go to SD ammo it is easy to find.

I try to practice with the exact round I'm going to use to save my life.
I don't do much target shooting so that works for me personally.
For instance I will put 10 on paper to see how I'm shooting and if good quit there, if not 5 more to perfect and then load my carry mag from the same box.
HST, Critical Defense and Carbon are some I like and have found to be reliable in the guns I shoot.

Anyone else ?

I just picked up a box of fiocci 155gr to try this weekend. Went to a few local shops and it was either that or critical defense. On the plus side the fiocci ran me about 1$ per round. Was thinking of trying the gold dots and golden sabers before settling on a round

Agree on the good price for 45 cal but don't you have a .40 ?
Did a quick search on the site above and didn't see .40 in HST (could be there somewhere) but did see .40 Speer Gold Dot 165 gr for $24.99.

Finally got betsy out to the range today (definately need much more range time). Fired 175 rounds through her. 100 winchester fmj 180 gr, 25 fiocci jhp 155 gr, and 50 rounds of jhp that my buddy bought from the range for 21 bucks . Betsy appearantly is not picky about what she eats. After having tried the fiocci jhp and having zero issues, i picked up a box of speer gold dot 165 gr for a comparison. I did notice sligtly better accuracy with the 180 gr fmj rounds, but thats most likely that i had more of them to play with. Federal hst will probably be picked up for the next range trip as well. Thank you everyone for the recommendations.

Hornaday does shoot dirty, but since it is for home defense and not the range, I keep a magazine of them ready for my Bersa 380. Once I pick up my XD9, I may just get one box for home defense only.
