In Ohio, gun dealers conducted 629,215 pre-sale background checks in 2012, including 102,531 in December, according to the FBI data. The yearly figure, which topped the record of 468,974 checks set in 2011, ranked seventh in the United States. That was a 34 percent increase from 2011.

The number of FBI background checks requested for Americans buying guns set a record in December, indicating that more people might ultimately buy a weapon after the Connecticut school massacre stirred interest in self-defense and prompted renewed talk of limits on firearms.

The FBI said it recorded 2.78 million background checks during the month, surpassing the mark set in November of 2.01 million checks. That’s about a 39 percent increase. The latest monthly figure was up 49 percent from December 2011, when the FBI performed a then-record 1.86 million checks.
