How do the XD's compare against each other in size? Are the 9/40 models the same? Compact vs. Full size? Sub-compact? Interchangeable parts? Size comparison against other guns, like Glock, S&W M&P?

Yes the 9 & 40 service pistols are the same size. In fact you can use a 9mm mag in a 40 s&w pistol or the other way around. All you need to do is adjust the feed lips of the mags. The round indacater will be off, but the mags are interchangable. You can also use the service mags in a sub compact. All that is needed is the grip extension. The xdm, however will not work in the standared xd's.
